The City of Dearborn and The Going Green Foundation, are working with CPNA members Maureen McIlrath and Jeffrey Pitoniak for a organic community garden and green house.
One proposed location is on the north west corner of Westwood and Heritage Parkway. This location would be ideal because it is near both churches and schools. The Going Green Foundation is interested in providing a grant in an organic, sustainable educational and volunteerism program. Many of my neighbors are gardeners and enjoy growing there own produce. I have enjoyed my neighbor Margaret's tomatoes for many years and have always wanted to start a garden that I too could share. Because of time or other constraints I was never able to start my own garden. Now I feel I must not only to benefit my own family, but to also benefit my neighbors and my community. Now the economy has forced me to look at my spending habits so that I can cut back. One of my highest costs is food, I believe in the benefits of eating organically. While I have found a way to cut some of my costs by joining a co-op, I could save even more money if I grew my own food. I would also have less waste because I would only harvest what I needed for the days meals. I would also be helping my planet by cutting down on my carbon footprint. I believe in sustainability, I believe that an organic community garden would benefit everyone for generations to come!.
The City of Dearborn will provide the land, gardening classes, composting and help with the initial building. Michigan State University's agriculture department have expressed interest in helping with the development of our organic community garden. Design and layout, soil testing, water system and green house. The Going Green Foundation is working on getting the rest of the supplies through donations from local GREEN businesses. Fencing, Walk, Gate, Rain Harvesting Barrels, composter, building materials, soil and seedlings. I am willing to donate my time, energy and self to this project.
